Luxury vinyl (LVF) is constructed with multiple layers that add to the durability, waterproof capabilities, and longevity. From top to bottom are the wear layer, image layer, core, and backing.

The top wear layer

This is a clear, strong melamine coating that protects the floor from scratches and scuffs and makes it impossible to "walk-off" the image layer.  It also helps with the waterproofing because it keeps spills from absorbing; they sit there waiting to be wiped off. The vinyl itself is durable, but if you’re going for luxury vinyl floors, be sure it has a thickness of at least 8-mm, or preferably higher.

Image is everything

The wear layer protects the image, and it features designs inspired by nature.  Photographs of wood, stone, or tile are taken with 3D photography, so it’s all clear and accurate, showing knots, swirls, and veining variations.  The colors and patterns are all vibrant. Micro beveling and embossing add depth, dimension, and textured appearances such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, or distressed.

The designs follow all industry trends regarding luxury vinyl flooring styles so that you can get just about anything from gray and high-gloss wood looks and marble bath floors to tiles with bold graphic patterns. LVF can be cut into long planks to mimic hardwood or square, groutable pieces to echo stone or tile. The waterproof core is made of vinyl composites, and the backing, which can be either cork or foam, eliminates sound and increases comfort.

LVF needs a daily sweeping and weekly mopping with a manufacturer-approved cleaner; avoid wax, shine promoting ones as they can damage the finish and dull.  Installation can be a fast and uncomplicated floating floor where the pieces click to mat and hover over the subfloor.
